Lake Retba or Lac Rose lies north of the Cap Vert peninsula of Senegal, north east of Dakar.
Lake Retba is pinker than any milkshake. Experts say the lake gives off its pink hue due to cyanobacteria (Dunaliella salina), a harmless halophilic bacteria found in the water. The lake is also known for its high salt content, which, like that of the Dead Sea, allows people to float effortlessly.
