The Wave, Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument, Utah

The geological history of the Grand Staircase of the Escalante just to the north of the Grand Canyon formed one of the most striking landscapes of the entire Colorado plateau. The abundance of colors and shapes exceed that of the famous Grand Canyon by far. One of these dreamscapes is the remote and barely reachable Wave. The erosive force of the wind formed this fragile wave out of sand that petrified 300 million years ago when this landscape was dominated by dunes in an arid continental environment.
